Am I in trouble? After I found this page I looked to see what I would cut out…. Ray, have you considered breaking it up into two parts. I see so many people concerned with word count, and not enough emphasis on quality content. Things to consider are how you are going to publish and what is your target audience. If you are going to self publish, then you have the final say how many words you wish to have in your novel.
As long as the story is engaging, it wont mater how many words are in it. Many times I find that novels are too short, especially if they are well written. They leave me wanting more, but always drop me off at the magical , word count. So, as I have seen many comments and have received similar advice, I will repeat the advice to you: Write as well as you can and tell your story. Word count can take last place on things to worry about when publishing your first novel.

I think Candide is under 40, Poetry is perhaps more exacting than prose and more condensed. A distinction has to be made between writers who are going to change the nature of the novel and those who are not. If you are in the first case no amount of advice is going to help. Nor is anyone going to publish your work, as it will be rejected by publishers because it does not fit their definition.
Now just go and write your novel. I will not, however, neglect to send my work off, in which case it will enter a zone, publishing, in which a writer is not a professional. If my work were published, I would not know why. Publishing is the art of the publisher. The publisher knows nothing about writing. At any point in history there may not be much correspondence between writing and publication, so you should at least put your work in drawer with your name on it and tell your next of kin where it is.
Genre is the prerogative of the publisher. If a writer knew he or she was in a genre, he or she would throw the stuff in the bin and start again. Sorry to debunk this web page, but, a book does not have to be 80, words to be a novel. I just finished writing another horror ghost novel that is 60, words and it is a novel. In fact, many say that 40k words and up is a novel. However, there is a lot of hype on this. Some say that 40k words is a novella and that 60k words and up is a novel.
So common guys, stop lying to everyone so that they will over load their story and mess it up to reach 80k words or higher, so that you are satisfied with their failure. Some stories have a little to tell and some have a lot to tell, so no Author should ever force their books to be gigantic unless the story being told has a lot to tell. That is pure malarkey. Furthermore, a story can be any amount of words and become famous and yes, even in the present and forever as long as the human race exists.
Stop the lies! Stop the hate!
